The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.
Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.
Competitors will gain the right to challenge specific decisions made by the chair umpire, echoing the practice currently in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This development arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to review specific decisions, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.
A Recent Example
A recent example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Growing Trend
Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.
Further Updates
Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.
Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
