Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is engaged in advanced talks to offload a portion of his shareholding in the Mercedes Formula 1 team.

This transaction estimates the Mercedes team at £4.6 billion – a record for an F1 team – following the McLaren team was appraised at £3.5bn in an adjustment to ownership structure in September.

The Austrian executive, who holds a 33% stake of the Mercedes F1 operation, plans to divest a shareholding approximately five percent.

The 53-year-old will remain as team principal and chief executive officer should the deal proceed.

Shareholder Structure

Remaining partners in Mercedes F1 are Mercedes and industrial group Ineos, who both hold a third of the company.

A Mercedes spokesperson said: "We will be making no official statement on the matter. The management structure of the team stays unaltered, and each shareholder are dedicated to continued achievements of the brand in F1."

Financial Increase

This arrangement would represent a significant increase in worth of Mercedes F1 since Ineos bought its stake for £208m in 2022.

This surge demonstrates the growth in valuations of F1 teams recently as a consequence of the increasing appeal of Formula 1 globally.

This trend was evident with the success of the F1 movie starring Brad Pitt, which was released in summer 2023 and earned over $630m (£458m) at the box office.

The film represents Pitt's most successful movie and the most successful sports film ever released.

Current Standings

The Mercedes team are runner-up in the team standings, behind McLaren Racing, with three races remaining in the current championship.

Mercedes' primary racer George Russell has secured victory in two of the 21 grands prix so far and is fourth in the drivers' championship after McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

Mercedes secured a record eight consecutive team titles and seven driver championships, six for Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, between 2014 and 2021.
