The English and Wales Drawn in the Same Group for the 2027 World Cup Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was overseen by rugby icons including former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side and Wales have been drawn in an identical group for the 2027 RWC, promising a major pool stage encounter in Australia. They are joined in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This draw recalls their memorable clash in the pool stages of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at Twickenham played a part in the English team's shock group stage elimination.

Other Notable Pool Draws

The Irish alongside Scotland have likewise been drawn in a pool together, just as the situation from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, they claimed a convincing victory, with their opponents unable to progress to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, who each made a strong impression as surprise packages in France, complete that same group.

Notably, the victors of these two groups are kept apart from holders and world number one the Springboks until the final, presuming the South Africans win their own group.

Tournament Ramifications

If the pools play out in line with the current world rankings, further top favourites like the All Blacks and France would remain separated from both England and the Irish all the way to the final.

Under those circumstances, Los Pumas would be the remaining top-ranked nation on the same half of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Face Major Fixture

Tournament hosts Australia have been drawn together with their great rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Pool A.

The Wallabies will kick off the World Cup in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee match designed to launch the event.

In other groups, holders South Africa have drawn Italy, Georgia and Romania. The French team are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the United States and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Los Pumas will face the Flying Fijians, Spain and the Canadian team as the tournament expands to 24 teams from the twenty who competed in France.

This edition will introduce a last-16 stage for the first time in the competition's history.

While the victor of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the game's biggest beasts early on, they will have to face the runner-up from Pool B – most likely Italy – in the first knockout round.

A total of four of the other six group winners will face a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
