The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job
The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the count of employment gains added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.
The number of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown
Though BLS was set to release last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that showed that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
