Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by captain Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in multiple conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second Ashes series against the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, following Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, he said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of play – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his short-term future in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
