A minimum of thirteen people perish and 98 wounded in rail accident in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship public works projects.

The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” declared the country's president.

The leader reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose term finished the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's developmental goals for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in national works. They were built at an accelerated rate, surpassing predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party urged an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This stoppage was requested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party stated that the situation "demands immediate answers."

In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and running of these national initiatives.
